The winter sports seasons are starting to pick up with boys basketball and wrestling seasons kicking off last week.

The following Lansing State Journal high school athlete of the week candidates were among the top performers from last week's contests in mid-Michigan.

Voting is open until noon Wednesday and the winner will be featured in the print edition of the LSJ.

JACOB DORN, ST. JOHNS BOYS BASKETBALL: The junior had a strong opening week of the season while helping the Redwings to road wins over Eaton Rapids and Waverly. Dorn had 24 points in a 74-58 victory over Eaton Rapids on Tuesday. He followed with 24 points and nine rebounds in a 74-68 win over Waverly.

GRACE GEORGE, DEWITT GIRLS BASKETBALL: The junior averaged 14.5 points while helping the Panthers stay perfect with victories over East Lansing and Mason last week. George had 13 points and hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer in a 59-58 home victory over East Lansing on Tuesday. She had 16 points for the Panthers in their win over Mason on Friday.

TIM HOUSER, EVERETT WRESTLING: The junior captain helped the Vikings beat city rival Eastern in a league dual meet for the first time in a decade in Wednesday’s season opener. Houser won the final match of the dual by major decision at 130 pounds to help Everett post the 40-35 win.

JESSICA STOSKOPF, BATH GIRLS BASKETBALL: The senior forward contributed to a pair of CMAC victories for the Bees last week. Stoskopf had 10 points in a 48-36 victory over Pewamo-Westphalia on Wednesday. She had a team-high 14 points in a win over Saranac on Friday for Bath, which is off to a 3-1 start.
