LANSING TWP. - Three people were hospitalized following a six-vehicle crash that forced police to close southbound U.S. 127 at Grand River Avenue during the Friday evening commute.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 127 were closed on Friday evening because of a crash involving six vehicles.

The crash happened on the bridge over Kalamazoo Street. Five vehicles came to rest in contact with each other along the guardrail on the east side of the southbound lanes. A sixth vehicle suffered minor damage.

A small sport-utility vehicle was crushed between two other vehicles, and rescue workers removed its roof to free a person pinned inside.

Lansing Township police Chief Kay Hoffman said three people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. One of the victims suffered broken bones, she said.

Hoffman said she had no other details on Friday night.

Southbound U.S. 127 was closed at Grand River Avenue for about 2½ hours. The lanes were reopened about 7:45 p.m.
