Larry Nassar to appeal federal sentence on child pornography convictions
Matt MencariniGRAND RAPIDS - Former MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar will appeal his 60-year prison sentence.
Nassar, 54, of Holt, was sentenced last week in federal court in Grand Rapids. U.S. District Court Judge Janet Neff sentenced him to a total of 60 years in prison, with three 20-year sentences running consecutively.
At the end of the hearing, one of Nassar's attorneys made an objection to the sentence.
On Wednesday, Nassar filed a formal notice of appeal.
After the federal sentencing on Dec. 7, Shannon Smith and Matt Newburg, the attorneys who have represented Nassar since last year, indicated that they would not represent him during appeals.
In addition to the federal child pornography charges, Nassar also pleaded guilty to 10 first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges split between Ingham and Eaton counties. He'll be sentenced on those charges starting in January and faces at least 25 years in prison, with a maximum of life in prison.
During the sentencing in federal court, Neff ordered Nassar to serve the federal sentences consecutive to the state sentences.
Since September 2016, more than 140 women and girls have said Nassar sexually abused them, almost all saying it occurred during medical appointments.
