LANSING – A 2-year-old girl remains in critical condition at University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor following a shooting Friday evening in Lansing that police say appears to be accidental.

Lansing Police Sgt. Todd Johnson said Sunday afternoon an adult is in police custody and is expected to be arraigned Monday on unspecified charges in connection with the incident.

"It's unintentional – as far as her injury goes," Johnson said.

The shooting occurred at about 8:45 p.m. Friday in the 5600 block of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and the suspect fled the scene before police arrived. Police said the family knows the suspect.

Johnson said the girl had successful emergency surgery, but could require another surgery because of her injury.

"The girl is doing much better, and her parents are with her," Johnson said.

Police said the girl was conscious and alert when police arrived at the scene.

Anyone having information regarding the incident can contact Detective Mike Looney at 483-6869 or Crime Stoppers at 483-7867.
