Magic Johnson's Lansing Promise dinner raises $1.1M for scholarships

LANSING - Earvin "Magic" Johnson promised another million dollar night in Lansing during the second annual Celebration of the Lansing Promise dinner.

It took a couple of weeks to total things up, but officials confirmed todaythat Johnson and company hit their mark.

The event raised about $1.1 million dollars, said Justin Sheehan, executive director of Lansing Promise, slightly more than last year's inaugural fundraiser.

"The amount of community support we've received is remarkable," Sheehan said.

Approximately $620,000 was collected in ticket sales, sponsorships and donations. The rest was donated by Johnson and friends, though Sheehan said individual donation figures are still being tabulated.

Close to 1,300 attendees saw Johnson introduce the night's special musical guests, "Earth, Wind and Fire," whose appearance was kept secret until the moment they took the stage inside the Lansing Center.

Funds raised will go toward college scholarships for students who live within the boundaries of the Lansing School District and graduate from one of the city's four high schools; Sexton, Everett, Eastern and Lansing Catholic. Students can use promise dollars toward up to 60 credits at Lansing Community College or they can receive up to $5,000 in assistance to attend Michigan State University.

MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo took the stage to praise Johnson and local supporters of the scholarship program during the event. He was flanked by Bryn Forbes and Denzel Valentine, who like Johnson are products of the Lansing School District.

The event also led to conversations with a number of large organizations who want to be corporate partners for future events, Sheehan said.
