East Lansing grad sets new scoring record at LCC

Former East Lansing guard Javon Haines (right) broke the Lansing Community College men's basketball single-game scoring record with 55 points on Saturday.

Lansing Community College shooting guard Javon Haines said he "zoned out" during Saturday's 127-73 blowout of Alpena Community College.

Apparently, the Lumberjacks did as well.

Haines, an East Lansing graduate, torched Alpena in the Muskegon Classic for a school-record 55 points — narrowly bypassing Paul Stoll Sr.'s previous record of 54 set in 1975.

“It was pretty good," LCC coach Mike Ingram said of Haines' performance. "He got to rolling. He had 20 points at halftime, he was playing pretty good, but he came out in the second half and hit his first five, six 3-pointers. He was on fire.

"I remember saying a couple times, 'There's no way he makes that shot.'"

Well, he did. And plenty of them.

In 31 minutes, Haines went 21 of 29 from the field, including 9 of 14 from three-point range. He also flirted with a triple-double, dishing out eight assists and hauling in 11 rebounds.

"What was going through my mind? Let's get this win," said Haines, who was named to the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference second team and all-freshman team last season. "They were letting me shoot, so I knew if I was wide open I'd make the shots."

With the Stars (7-1) up big, Ingram put his 6-foot-2, 180-pound sophomore on the bench with about five minutes remaining. Haines was sitting on 52 points when someone from the sideline informed Ingram that his guard was a bucket away from school history.

Ingram told him he had three minutes to get it.

"I'm sitting here thinking that we're killing this team and guys wanted to have him put back in," said the 24-year head coach. "Guys were just giving him the ball.

"He had 45 earlier in the year in a game we won by (four). We thought he should have had 50, also, that game. I think that’s the first time during my time as a head coach that a guy scored 50."
