College notes: Grand Ledge grad wins national title

Harris Edwards III set a pair of school records while helping the Indiana Tech men's track and field team take second at the NAIA national meet last weekend.

The Grand Ledge graduate won the 200-meter dash with a school record time of 20.71 seconds and took third in the 100 with a record time of 10.33 seconds. He was also on Indiana Tech's 400 relay team that placed fourth.

Edwards' success helped the Warriors finish four points behind national champion Concordia (Nebraska) at the meet, which took place in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

• MICHIGAN STATE: Harry Jadun (East Lansing) and doubles partner John Patrick Mullane had a deep tournament run that ended in the national semifinals of the NCAA Championships on Saturday.

Jadun and Mullane finished the season with a 21-5 record that included 10 victories against ranked opponents. They defeated three ranked opponents to reach the national semifinals and earn All-American honors.

• FURMAN: Sophomore distance runner Tanner Hinkle (Mason) will be competing in the NCAA East Regional, which starts Thursday. Hinkle is in the regional field for a second straight season and will compete in the 10,000-meter run. Hinkle broke his own school record in the 10,000 with a time of 29:16.77 at the Stanford Invitational in April. He also set a school record in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:09.61 this spring.

• OLIVET: Andrew Benkovsky (Eaton Rapids) earned All-American honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III outdoor track championships last weekend. Benkovsky finished seventh, setting a school record with a time of 9:04.94 while becoming the school's first outdoor track All-American since 1984.

• MADONNA: Senior Kasey Trierweiler (Grand Ledge) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America softball first team Tuesday. Trierweiler had a 3.96 grade point average as an accounting major. She also hit .363 with 17 RBI for the Crusaders.

• HAMPDEN-SYDNEY: Senior golfer Brian Burt (Holt) was named a first team All-American for the second time earlier this month. Burt earned the accolade after finishing 12th at the NCAA Division III championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

• KELLOGG COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Garret Soule (Dansville) has been a contributor for Kellogg, which is playing in the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. Soule is batting .351 with 35 RBI and 23 doubles for Kellogg, which is in the World Series for the first time since 2011.

• AQUINAS: Tori DeSira (DeWitt) earned All-American honors after being part of the Saints' 1,600 relay team that finished eighth at the NAIA meet. DeSira also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles to earn All-American status. Erika Heston (Haslett) finished ninth in the 100 hurdles at the meet.

• ALMA: Freshman Mary Brooks (Portland) was a starter in right field for the Scot softball team and contributed in a run to the NCAA Championships that ended Friday. Brooks hit .365 with six doubles and 14 RBI in 30 games for Alma.

• OAKLAND: Utility player Ian Yetsko (DeWitt) was recently named second team All-Horizon League in baseball. Yetsko hit .295 with 22 doubles, three homers and 28 RBI this spring for the Grizzlies, who finished 10-39.

• SIENA HEIGHTS: Rebecca Cousineau (Leslie) finished 14th in the discus at the NAIA track championships. She had a throw of 147-5 1/2.
