Lansing State Journal

Michigan State used a 10-0 run in the fourth set to cruise to 3-1 win over Northwestern Wednesday night at Jenison Field House.

The Spartans had 70 digs, its second time in the last three matches recording 70 or more and its third-highest total this season.

The wins snaps a seven-game losing streak, MSU's longest since 1993. MSU is now 37-34 all-time against Northwestern, and split the season series. Northwestern took a 3-1 win over MSU in Evanston on Oct. 31.

The Spartans (15-13, 7-0) traded leads with the Wildcats in the first set before securing a 28-26 win. They then dropped the second set, but a 10-3 run in the third set gave the Spartans some momentum.

“We started off playing a little tentative, and we addressed that after the first two sets," MSU head coach Cathy George said in a press release. "We made some adjustments that worked, but we also played with more confidence and poise in the final two sets. Getting that third-set win was important for us, and hopefully this helps us get back on the right track and to play the way we know how to play. We have our next two on the road, and there’s no doubt that our backs are still against the wall. We’ll want this to carry over when we take on Rutgers on the road on Saturday."

Chloe Reinig tied her season high with 18 kills on the night, adding four blocks and three digs for the Spartans, while Allyssah Fitterer added 13 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Megan Tompkins led the team with nine blocks, tying her career best. Tompkins added seven kills.
