EAST LANSING — With a new school year underway, college students are being targeted in a new round of telephone scams.

Callers are telling students that a warrant has been issued for their arrest and that they need to pay a fine immediately by phone to avoid being arrested, East Lansing police said in a news release. Michigan State University police also have received complaints, according to the release.

Neither police agency calls anyone and demands that fines be paid over the phone, it said.

Anyone who receives such a call should simply hang up, East Lansing Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth said. Anyone who fell prey to the scam can report it to police, he said.
