LANSING – Lansing police are investigating how long a three-year-old Lansing girl who was hospitalized today in critical condition was alone on a sidewalk in freezing temperatures overnight.

Lansing Police Sgt. Joe Brown said there's been no update on the child's condition since this morning. Her injuries are related to severe hypothermia.

The child was found by a relative on the sidewalk in front of an apartment complex where she lived in the 3500 block of Bayview Drive, Brown said.

Brown said it's believed the girl got out of bed, opened the outer door of the family's apartment and went outside, and was unable to get back in through the locked door.

Police said they are not sure how long she was outside or what she was wearing, but the temperature was 3 degrees at 8:30 a.m. when she was found.

LPD detectives are still interviewing the girl's parents, who Brown said are distraught.
